Arthritis In Dogs – The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same

New “breakthroughs” in the treatment of arthritis in dogs are… (stay well back) – cold packs and checking if the dog is lame!

Wow. That’s not a lot of breakthroughs, you might say. And you would be right.

Arthritis in dogs is a common debilitating condition and the saddest thin is how little we can do about it. For most owners it’s the choice of anti-inflammatorys… or anti-inflammatorys. The sad thing is that most dogs that go on arthritis drugs will stay on them for life.

And the new ‘breakthroughs’ don’t offer much hope either:

“Another area of research employees the use of a pressure mat. As the dog walks across the mat the affected limb can be identified by the amount of pressure applied. By measuring the amount of pressure applied to the limb before and after treatment professionals can tell how effective the treatment was.”

Yeah, that ‘pressure mat’ is just a fancy, expensive way to tell if your dog is lame. I can tell that by looking at the dog, without a pressure mat.
