Should You Have Your Dog’s Anal Glands Removed?

So your dog has a problem with anal glands. Big problem. And you are thinking about having the anal glands removed.

I presume that you know the basics about anal glands by now. If not, just read my article on ANAL GLANDS

I want to talk specifically about anal gland removal.

If your dog has an ongoing anal gland disease – having the glands removed sounds like a perfect solution: no glands, no problem.

The good news – dogs can live without anal glands just fine. And the problem is gone.

The bed news – there is a very important nerve that runs around the anus and just next to the anal glands. If that nerve is damaged, the dog could become permanently faecally incontinent. That means, the dog will not be able to hold on to go to the toilet to poop.

This is very serious. For most people the idea of a dog who poops in the house at random is unacceptable. What’s more, this complication is unpredictable. Don’t let any Vets tell you that they can prevent this from happening, because they can’t.

This is why for me the removal of anal glands is a procedure of last resort. I wouldn’t do it unless I felt that there is no other choice.

Most dogs will improve with regular anal gland emptying and increased fibre in their diet (rice, vegetables etc.)

  1. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew
of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.
I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some
time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this.
Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog
and I look forward to your new updates.
