The Onslow County Animal Shelters are having so much trouble re-homing black and dark coloured dogs they are cutting the prices on all black dog adoptions:
“What we’ve learned is that large black or brown dogs tend to be the last ones to get adopted from shelters,” said Alan Davis, director of Onslow County Animal Services. “Many times, the black /brown dogs with no markings appear to be a little bit plain, even though they’re bursting with personality, so we at Animal Services have to accentuate that. People are looking for a face to fall in love with, and if that dog doesn’t stand out in a crowd, they just get overlooked.”
Should you buy a black dog and save money? I say go for it! Some of my best patients are black dogs.
The one area where I would tread cautiously is with black Labradors. There is some evidence of increased incidence of aggression in those dogs, possibly colour linked. I am serious.
