Could Truffle Hunting Be The New Jackpot?

With American industry struggling, it’s not often these days one hears of a new emerging marked worth potentially millions of dollars. nd the amazin thing is – anyone can join in the hunt. All you need is to have a suitably trained dog:

“Scent training is one of the easiest things you can do with a dog, because of the natural proclivity,” Ms. Kalik said. But before any instruction, she and Ms. Slocum evaluate each dog’s suitability for truffling, which requires a good degree of fitness, an ability to think independently and focus on a task for hours, and a tolerance for occasionally cold, damp conditions.

“You can train any breed,” said Ms. Kalik, but breeds like Labrador and golden retrievers, which make good pets and good working dogs, are “a happy medium.”

Truffles don’t grow in fields like corn or cabbages. The very unpredictability of their growth makes anyone a potential contender for the prize. All you need is determination, skill and a well trained dog.

Frankly, if I lived in Oregon, I would be taking my dog to join the local truffle-hunting school right now!
