As my loyal readers already know, I am not a fan of Cesar Millan.
It’s now what he does, it’s how he does it that bothers me. I don’t doubt Cesar’s skill or his personal magnetism. The problem is, you can’t teach personal magnetism and most of his dog training techniques are not transferable to your average dog owner. Some of the ways he takes on aggressive dogs can be downright dangerous if tried by an amateur.
So it might come as a surprise to you that I like ‘Leader Of The Pack‘ – his new adoption TV show.
In the show Cesar rehabilitates abandoned dogs with behavior problems and then teaches prospective adopter families how to handle their new dog.
So why do I like it? Because of the potential this show has to make stray dogs appealing! Every day I see good, responsible families adopt dogs from pet shops – dogs completely unsuitable for their lifestyle, not mentioning astronomically expensive. All the while there are abandoned dogs in shelters all over the country languishing with no chance of redemption.
Of course a ‘brand new’ dog is more exciting. And for some people a pure breed really is a better option. It’s just that I would love to see every family try their luck at a dog shelter first. As a Veterinarian who worked in dog shelters for years I know first hand the heartbreak of seeing wonderful dogs left unwanted. I only hope that Cesar’s new show will add that extra sparkle to the possibility of adopting a shelter dog. We can live in hope. Right?
