This ‘Celebrity’ Is Not Fit For The Wild

A Koala made famous of Facebook is released back into the wild after years in captivity. I fear the consequences:

‘An orphaned koala who became an international star after images of him were posted on Tourism Australia’s Facebook page has been released back into the wilderness.

Jimmy was hit by a car on the New South Wales coast a few years ago, in an accident that killed his mother and left him badly injured.

But after years of rehabilitation at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital he is fighting fit again and ready to resume his life in the bush.’

The Facebook photos show Jimmy lounging on chairs, sitting on the kitchen sink and doing other household things. This is clearly not an animal rehabilitated to be fit for the wild.

The ability to fend for themselves and fear of people are essential qualities required for a wild animal to survive. That’s why proper rehabilitation requires keeping an animal in conditions resembling their natural environment – not kitchen sinks.

I fear that the release was prompted by public pressure, and an opportunity to create a news story.

The photos are cute but i fear what will happen to this koala in the wild.

Wild life is not cute. And there are no cameras in the bush either.
