Why Dogs Eat Grass

One of the most common questions I get asked as a Veterinarian is ‘Why does my dog eat grass?’

Clients then usually follow up with a suggestion as to why it may be so. These suggestions usually fall into one of the groups below:

  • My dog has nutritional deficiency.
  • My dog is sick and is eating grass to make himself better.
  • My dog knows which grass is good for his health.

The fact is, there is no evidence at all that dogs eat grass because something is wrong with them. I have seen plenty of health dogs eat grass for no good reason. I suspect they are doing it just because. The good news is, there is no evidence grass is bad for them either so you don’t need to stop them.

Hope that helps. Now to solve the question why my three-year-old toddler eats grass.
