The capture of Malcolm Naden – Australia’s most wanted criminal is generating a lot of media waves down here. The only members of the team who are not getting deserved credit are the Police dogs. This is a great shame because more then any other members of the law enforcement unit it is the dogs who risked their lives and made the capture possible.
Naden has spend years hiding in dense bushland heavily armed and taunting Police. Unable to capture him via conventional means, officers went back to the drawing board changing the structure of the units and building their strategy largely around the skills and abilities of the Police dog.
The dogs were place in the head of the capture team working to sniff out the man and use their senses to alert to dangers. It was a Police dog who risked his life by charging at the armed criminal through difficult terrain finally immobilising him.
I have had a privilege during my career to treat some of these highly trained dog and i can tell you – they are the unsung heroes of law enforcement today.
